Frequently Asked Questions

What does ‘Progressive Catholic’ mean?

Saint John’s is an Anglo-Catholic parish, seeking to teach and live the Catholic faith as it has been received by the Church of England.  We place special emphasis on the importance of worship, the Eucharist and other sacraments, the life of prayer and social justice.
We try to make our worship beautiful, warm and dignified, engaging all the senses through music, colour, movement, candles, incense and ikons.
We seek to respect, uphold and learn from the traditions of the past; interpret them for the present; and listen to where God is calling us in the future.
Saint John’s is committed to being an open and inclusive church where everyone is welcomed and valued.  We are a community of people of diverse ages, backgrounds and lifestyles, and we encourage the participation and vocation of all.

Is this a Roman Catholic Church?

No.  Saint John’s is a Church of England parish, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.  Although we share many beliefs with Roman Catholics, and our services are very similar, we are independent of the Vatican and the Pope.

May I receive Holy Communion at Saint John’s?

All baptised Christians who have been admitted to Holy Communion in their own denomination are welcome to receive the Sacrament at Saint John’s.
Children are normally admitted to Holy Communion at around the age of eight.  Baptised adults are admitted to Holy Communion at Confirmation, or beforehand if they signal their intent to be Confirmed.
If you are unsure whether or not to receive Holy Communion, please speak, in confidence, to the Parish Priest.

I’m not good enough to go to Church … Am I?

Yes!  Like everyone else in the world, Christians make mistakes, get things wrong and sometimes do things they’re ashamed of.  Some of the greatest Saints did things that would make your hair curl!
Nobody at Saint John’s is perfect (except the Vicarage cats…), but we come to Church because we know that Christ accepts us as we are, forgives what we have done wrong and guides us in love to do better.  Whatever you may have done or been, Church is for you!

Isn’t Church really boring?

Not usually…  Saint John’s aims to have a beautiful style of worship, with plenty of things to look at, think about and experience.  There’s lots going on in the week, including prayer and learning, activities for children and young people, fellowship and social events.  People call us “the parish that knows how to enjoy itself,” and we try hard to live up to our reputation…
We don’t think you’ll find us stuffy, pompous, judgemental or dull - but the best way to find out is to come and see for yourself!

Can I bring my children to Saint John’s?

Of course.  Children are just as much a part of the Church as adults.  There is plenty to see and do at our services, and children of all ages are very welcome.
There is a quiet play area at the back of the church for younger children, and a hall just outside if they get restless - although nobody minds a bit of noise from our youngest members.  Children and young people aged 7 or over are welcome to join the serving team or choir.
Eagles, a club for children aged 7-10, meets on a Friday night at 6:30 pm.
